All over the country Americans are preparing for the solar eclipse and the Cul-de-sac Jungle is no exception. The Suburban Wundermutt is properly protected and ready to enjoy the astronomical wonder. His keen ability to detect earthquakes before they happen was spot on a few years ago and the eclipse will bring a new challenge. SCIENCE!!
The Suburban Wundermutt is a creature of varying moods. In a moment of quiet contemplation he becomes the 60 pound lapdog. Climbing up onto the chair he eases into a familiar sprawled position, resting comfortably while enjoying the high perch on which to observe the outer reaches of the Cul-de-sac Jungle. These moments of self reflection are necessary to keep him grounded (well not literally) while being humbled by all that he oversees. At any moment a wayward deer or groundhog could come by and upset the delicate balance. Even worse… the US postal service vehicle he covets so much could drive by with its familiar cracked muffler, sending our canine compadre into a frenzy of unbridled angst.
During an early morning walk the Suburban Wundermutt spots another wayward deer trying to stealthily graze in the shadows. What follows next is not suitable for family viewing. Sufficed the say the deer will not be returning to the Cul-de-sac Jungle… well… for at least 15 minutes.
Ah summertime… a time of carefree exuberance, chasing rubber toys in the grass and lying on air conditioning vents in his lair to cool down. Good times for the Suburban Wundermutt. The bag of Beggin’ Strips is bottomless and every day is Saturday. But, in less than two months, Autumn will slowly creep in and the Cul-de-sac Jungle will cease to be only a place of fun and frolic. Our canine crusader remembers too well the brutal 46 degree winters that follow the autumn foliage. Time to fatten up now if he wants to make it through the unrelenting North Carolina winter.
With a convenient new personal back door installed in his lair, the Suburban Wundermutt can come and go across the back deck freely to peruse all parts of the Cul-de-sac Jungle as he sees fit. And yet his favorite spot remains just below the kitchen table. The look is classic SWM… he stares relentlessly but politely, as to not wildly bring attention to himself. Instead, he waits ever so patiently, knowing small bits of food will somehow make there way to within his reach. Amazing how he does that. Dyson or Hoover could only hope to develop a vacuum cleaner that effective.
If only he could salute, the Suburban Wundermutt would give our veterans the thanks and praise they so richly deserve. We have fun telling of our canine friend’s adventures but without the tremendous sacrifice of all our past and present veterans there might not be a Cul-de-sac Jungle or the freedom with which to enjoy it. Thanks again to all our fallen heroes! As the old Memorial Stadium plaque in Baltimore so eloquently stated … “Time will not dim the glory of their deeds.”
With the only mom he’s ever known enjoying a well deserved rest, the Suburban Wundermutt remains vigilant. He sits stealthily in the shadows while overseeing the back yard to protect against overzealous mockingbirds and intrusive squirrels. Happy Mothers Day from the Cul-de-sac Jungle!
The Suburban Wundermutt loves the feel of the tall grass against his belly in spring.
Feeling almost giddy, he howls for the entire Cul-de-sac Jungle to hear and invites anyone within ear shot to come on over for a Beggin’ Strip and a bowl of cool tap water.
Life is good… especially this dog’s life!!

As the days of Spring get warmer the Suburban Wundermutt fine tunes his survival skills. Much like the nocturnal racoon or opossum, he is keenly aware of what the night will bring. Only visible here through night vision glasses he stealthily hones his exceptional skills as they will be on full display throughout the season in the Cul-de-sac Jungle. Beware rubber toys… Chew-Fest 2017 is about to begin!
